We're the UK's leading bowel cancer charity

Our awareness work in Wales

Wednesday 22 January 2025

A key part of our work towards a future where nobody dies of bowel cancer is raising awareness of the disease and it's symptoms.

One of the ways we do this is by being active in local communities, holding talks, attending events and bringing our awareness roadshow to different locations throughout the year.

2024 was an amazing year for our awareness work in Wales. Throughout the year, we were able to:

  • Run 41 awareness stands, which saw volunteers in local supermarkets, town squares and events
  • Hold 15 awareness talks for businesses and community groups
  • Take our giant inflatable bowel to Newport and Rhyl with our awareness roadshow

Some of these activities included a talk to the Chai Club at the India Centre, Cardiff, a stand at the C’aware fishing community event at Aberystwyth Harbour and being part of the Betsi Cadwaladr health and wellbeing tent at the Denbigh and Flint show. We were also joined by local healthcare professionals, to help answer any questions and concerns about bowel cancer, at our Newport Roadshow.

The two people stood to the left are healthcare professionals and wearing blue uniforms. The person stood to the right is wearing a grey hoodie with a light teal Bowel Cancer UK t-shirt underneath.

A photo of two Bowel Cancer UK volunteers stood either side of a table. The table has different leaflets and booklets stacked in piles on it and a light teal table cloth. Both of the volunteers are wearing light teal Bowel Cancer UK branded t-shirts and are smiling at the camera. Behind them is a large window which overlooks a small garden.

The three volunteers are all wearing light teal Bowel Cancer UK t-shirts. The people stood at the left and middle of the group have black jackets over the top of them. Behind them are bags of compost and two large windows.

Across all of our activities we met with a total 2,549 members of the Welsh public. We spoke to them about the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer, what to do if they develop symptoms, and the importance of the routine bowel screening programme.

This year, we'll be building on our previous work and focusing on the communities that have  lower uptake of screening and worse bowel cancer outcomes. Our awareness roadshow, and giant inflatable bowel, will also be returning to Wales later this year, with a visit to Swansea.
